Frank Saliani

My work explores the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Not just the tangible objects in our lives, but the experiences, relationships, and the ideas that make us who we are.  My work explores larger relationships and patterns that occur through the interaction of people, and the world around them. Sometimes thrown, hand built, or cast from custom molds, utilitarian wares include simple, intimate forms like cups and bowls, and larger more complex pieces like teapots, vases, pitchers and serving sets.

My sculptural work explores the many forms that pattern and symmetry take, and it sometimes references function, without being bound by it.

Along with my functional objects, they form a dichotomy that embodies the larger themes, patterns, and ideas that contribute to our lives, and the smaller objects, moments, and actions, that merge to create them.

These concepts are embodied in how my wares are made, the finished work, and how they fit into the everyday life of the user. I am committed to making work in a thoughtful manner, with an eye towards sustainability. All of my work is fired in an electric kiln. It is useful, beautiful, durable and microwave and dishwasher safe.

KIND WORDS…

“We met Frank at the Capital City farmer’s market and loved his work. We made an appointment to talk about a set of dinner plates and bowls. Frank was extremely helpful and patient while we mixed and matched his designs, and helped us decide on a creative mix. We now have a beautiful and unique set of plates and bowls that we love.  His work is not only gorgeous, but also functional and durable.”
